Database Auditing: Best Practices for improving performance and security

Oracle Database provides the industry’s most comprehensive and flexible auditing capability. Effective audit policies let you monitor database activity with a negligible performance impact. In this session, you’ll learn how to create audit policies that are selective and targeted to your needs, avoiding the common pitfall of collecting unnecessary audit information that, in turn, impacts database performance, increases storage costs, and may make it more difficult to spot malicious activity. Angeline Dhanarani, Principal Product Manager for Database Auditing, will share key tips to capture relevant audit events, reduce false positives, and support quick and reliable threat detection – all without compromising database performance!

Diagnosing Oracle RAC Performance Issues using AWR reports

This session will focus on using AWR reports to tune OLTP and DSS workloads running on Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) both on generic systems and Exadata. This includes hints and tips to focus on relevant sections of the AWR report to quickly understand the root cause of the problem. Further, we will review AWR reports of some interesting real-world performance issues reported by customers and the diagnostics involved in resolving them

Query Rewrite: The Supreme League of Materialized Views

Materialized Views are very useful to increase the performance of frequently executed queries. In many database applications, Materialized Views are accessed directly using SQL. However, the use of Query Rewrite is much more elegant and flexible: The optimizer decides independently whether a suitable Materialized View can be used to accelerate the query. The goal is to be able to improve the performance of different queries with the smallest possible number of Materialized Views. Query Rewrite offers excellent possibilities for this.
Although Query Rewrite is available in Oracle databases for a long time, the feature is still unknown to many Oracle developers and database administrators, or it is not used due to its complexity. This presentation shows the power of Query Rewrite, how it is configured correctly, what has to be considered when creating Materialized Views and which new features have been introduced in versions 12.2, 18c, and 19c.

Active SQL Monitor Reports

SQL monitor reports have been around for a long time. They are extremely useful in diagnosing the performance of a single execution of a SQL statement. Next to AWR, ASH, and SQL-trace, they are a tool every performance engineer should be comfortable with. In this session, we will introduce you to active SQL monitor reports. We’ll first explain when SQL monitor is available, how to generate them, and discuss the anatomy of a SQL monitor report. In the 2nd part of this session, we’ll go through a few example SQL monitor reports, and show how to use them to find the root cause of a poorly performing SQL statement.
