OEM: Metric “Tablespace Allocation Metric” not Collected – Agent is Running but Not Ready

Hi all,

That’s an interesting case with OEM. A client reported the metric “Tablespace Allocation Metric” is not being updated on OEM for a specific database. In this case, the last gathering was in Nov/2020, as you’ll see.

When checking for it, the first try as usual was checking on the OEM agent status, and here is what I got:

oracle:dbserver@mydb02 /u01/app/oracle: /u01/app/oracle/product/agent12c/core/12.1.0.5.0/bin/emctl status agent

Agent is Running but Not Ready

Agent not ready, that’s interesting.
Trying then to clear the agent state as this has solved some previous similar cases:

oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle: /u01/app/oracle/product/agent12c/core/12.1.0.5.0/bin/emctl clearstate agent
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 5
Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
EMD clearstate completed successfully

Now running the problematic metric manually:

oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle: runCollection c1test_DW:oracle_pdb tbspAllocation                                                                <
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 5
Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
---------------------------------------------------------------
EMD runCollection error:The agent is running but is currently not ready to accept client requests

Ok, trying to just upload the case:

oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle: /u01/app/oracle/product/agent12c/core/12.1.0.5.0/bin/emctl upload
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 5
Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
---------------------------------------------------------------
EMD upload error:The agent is running but is currently not ready to accept client requests

Maybe something is stuck, so let’s kill the process and start all over again:

oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle: /u01/app/oracle/product/agent12c/core/12.1.0.5.0/bin/emctl stop agent
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 5
Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
Stopping agent ...

 stopped.

Making sure we have no agent process running:

oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle:  ps -ef | grep java | agent
oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle:

Also adjusting the threshod for metric running:

oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle: /u01/app/oracle/product/agent12c/core/12.1.0.5.0/bin/emctl  setproperty agent -a
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 5
Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
EMD setproperty succeeded
oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle: /u01/app/oracle/product/agent12c/core/12.1.0.5.0/bin/emctl setproperty agent -allow_new -name _cancelThread  -value 210
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 5
Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
EMD setproperty succeeded

And starting the agent:

oracle:dbserver02@c1test2 /u01/app/oracle: /u01/app/oracle/product/agent12c/core/12.1.0.5.0/bin/emctl start agent
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 5
Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
Starting agent ........................................................................................................................... started but not ready.

On the Agent log:

Long story short: After some investigation, bumped in MOS Database Hangs With Simple Queries like on view dba_data_files & dba_free_space (Doc ID 2665935.1)
Turns out this seemed to be a match. So proceeding with the recommendation:

SQL> alter session set container=DW;

Session altered.

SQL> show pdbs

    CON_ID CON_NAME                       OPEN MODE  RESTRICTED
---------- ------------------------------ ---------- ----------
         3 DW                             READ WRITE NO
SQL> select count(*) from dba_recyclebin;

  COUNT(*)
----------
     28522

SQL> purge recyclebin;

Recyclebin purged.

SQL> purge dba_recyclebin;

DBA Recyclebin purged.

Once done, all issues solved and metric being collected again:

Some additional reference:

  • EM12c : emctl start / status agent ‘Agent Running but Not Ready’ ‘ERROR – The agent is overloaded [current requests: 30]’ Reported in gcagent.log (Doc ID 1546529.1)

I hope it helps!

Orphan ASM File Cleanup Script

Hi all,

So I got asked by a client to perform a checking on ASM for orphan files, as they have some frequent create/drop database on this environment, as being a development env.

Also, lots of databases shared the same data diskgroup, so I had to work this out for all databases and also for possible inexistent databases.

Some basic approaches I raised:

1) Locating uncatalloged files in ASM per database.
– Source: https://oraganism.wordpress.com/2012/09/09/orphaned-files-in-asm/
– This approach assumes the files on ASM uncatalogged to any database are the Orphaned ones. Which is a fair assumption.
– But I understand that files can be catalloged and unmonted, which would brake this approach.

2) Listing files in ASM but not in database (v$datafile, v$datafile_copy, v$controlfile, v$tempfile, v$logfile) by database.
– Source: https://oracledba.blogspot.com/2018/11/orphaned-files-in-asm.html
– This seems a fair assumption. Would need to be ran from each database.
– There is not guarantee if this is working properly or not.
– Not clear also if PDB files are included.
– There is another similar one: https://dbaliveblog.wordpress.com/asm-orphaned-file-identification-script/
– Also this one: https://anjo.pt/wp/keyword-oracle/2013/02/26/find-orphan-asm-files/

3) MOS: Query That Can Be Used to Find Orphaned Datafiles on a 12c ASM Instance (Doc ID 2228573.1)
– From MOS, seems the most recommended approach.
– Attention point: PDB$SEED may not be shown as per: PDB$SEED Datafiles Not Appear In CDB_DATA_FILES (Doc ID 1940806.1)
— On 12.1.0.2, recommended to use “EXCLUDE_SEED_CDB_VIEW”. To check if it can be done on session level.

I downloaded and ran referred script on MOS Script to report the list of files stored in ASM and CURRENTLY NOT OPENED (Doc ID 552082.1) on the environment.
But the results didn’t sound correct.

After a while, I ended up building my own script based on all mentioned approaches and it worked very fine.

After approved I dropped all the listed files, freed a several TBs of space and no database affected. So I’d assume it as correct and would really recommend it for you.

So what did I used:

ORA-01450 on Index Rebuild

Hello all,
So, I got this:

SQL> ALTER INDEX MATHEUS.INDEX_1 REBUILD online TABLESPACE NEW_TBS;
ALTER INDEX MATHEUS.INDEX_1 REBUILD online TABLESPACE NEW_TBS
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01450: maximum key length (3215) exceeded

So, is this a bug? Yes it is.

From MOS ALTER INDEX REBUILD ONLINE Fails with ORA-01450 (Doc ID 236329.1):
“This is caused by issue Bug:2525767. The online rebuild of the index creates a journal table and index. This internal journal IOT table contains more columns in its index. Their total length is greater than number reported in ORA-01450 error message. This is a feature of online rebuild.
Maximum key length is calculated with respect to the database block size. It means that current value of the initialization parameter db_block_size is not large enough so that the internal journal IOT can be created without errors.”

Wanna know more, there is a great article on how this works exactly, by Alex Gorbachev: ORA-01450 During Online Index Rebuild

The solution?
It simply cannot be done online as explained, so doing it offline is the solution:

SQL> ALTER INDEX MATHEUS.INDEX_1 REBUILD TABLESPACE NEW_TBS;

Index altered.

Hope it helps, cheers!

ORA-02429 on Drop Tablespace

Ok, so here is the error:

SQL> DROP TABLESPACE MY_TBS INCLUDING CONTENTS AND DATAFILES;
DROP TABLESPACE MY_TBS INCLUDING CONTENTS AND DATAFILES
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-02429: cannot drop index used for enforcement of unique/primary key

Hmm… Sounds pretty clear, right? So how to workaround it?

This is documented on MOS Drop Tablespace Failed with ORA-02429: cannot drop index used for enforcement of unique/primary key (Doc ID 1918060.1)

So, FIRST make sure this is not a problem for your application.
In case it is not, here is my step by step with some better scripting:

1) Disable the Constrains:

SQL> select 'ALTER TABLE '||owner||'.'||table_name||' DISABLE CONSTRAINT '|| constraint_name||';'
from dba_constraints
where (index_owner,index_name) in (select owner,index_name from dba_indexes
where tablespace_name='MY_TBS');

2) In case of PKs, you may need to disable it with CASCADE clause:

SQL> select 'ALTER TABLE '||owner||'.'||table_name||' DISABLE CONSTRAINT '|| constraint_name||' cascade;'
from dba_constraints
where (index_owner,index_name) in (select owner,index_name from dba_indexes
where tablespace_name='MY_TBS');

3) Drop the tablespace:

SQL> DROP TABLESPACE MY_TBS INCLUDING CONTENTS AND DATAFILES;

Hope it helps,
Cheers!

Saving database space with ASSM

It’s good way reclaim WASTED space from tables and index using  the Segment Advisor.

To perform an database reclaim procedure using Automatic Segment Space Management (ASSM) it is preferred to create tablespaces with below option:

grepdb> CREATE TABLESPACE HR
DATAFILE '+GREPORADG/'
SIZE 10M EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL
SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO;

Only tablespaces with segment space auto are eligible to Segment Advisor.

To manually run the Segment Advisor on OEM:

guid-65f07e4f-0482-47df-bdf9-8d34b625093a-default

It will save some database storage area, and make it more effective cause by LHWM/HHWM.

Purge SYSAUX Tablespace

Your SYSAUX is bigger than the rest of database?
It’s not uncommon to “old” databases, usually bad administrated. Some databases configuration must cause this situation.

The general indication is to review stats and reports retention of objects and database.

But if you need to clean it now, how to do?
1) PURGE_STATS. It’s recommended to execute in smaller steps. Otherwise the RBS tablespace will be blown up.
2) Oracle is sometimes building new extents for SYSAUX stats table in other tablespaces. They will be moved back to the SYSAUX tablespace.
3) The Index rebuild will decrease the size of the indexes. They are mostly larger as the raw data.
4) The Indexes are partly function bases. Therefore it is imported in which order the index rebuild will be done. Otherwise you have to reexecute this steps again and again.

Going practical, I used the follow:

exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-180);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-160);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-140);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-120);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-100);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-80);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-60);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-40);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-20);
exec DBMS_STATS.PURGE_STATS(SYSDATE-7);
